Compensation paid to Somerset slave owners (+AGM)
This month’s meeting is at 7.00 for 7.30 on Tuesday 27th October at the MCF chapel between the Pharmacy and Parish Hall in Church Street – members free, visitors £3.00. We will also be holding our AGM, don’t worry it’ll be over before you know it! I have therefore attached all the relevant information for you to have a look at beforehand. Also attached is our programme for 2027, including this month’s talk by Chris Dickinson as detailed below.
To ease Autumn chills this month we visit the sunny Caribbean islands as well as West Africa with passing references to India and Burma. What these places have in common is that they are all connected to local people who in 1834 received compensation for the loss of property, the property in question being enslaved workers on their plantations. During his talk Chris will explain how compensation came to be paid and look in detail at 4 local people who received it as well as identifying where their plantations where, information which is now available online. Details will be provided as to how you can access this information for yourselves to see if any of your ancestors or places you know have similar global links.
Yearly subscriptions are now due, still £10.00 still great value!
